Kathmandu. Iran says it will not be in a position to participate in the 2026 World Cup.
Iran’s sports minister Ahmad Duumali has said that his country will not be able to participate in the 2026 World Cup to be held jointly in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Iran’s involvement has been in uncertainty since the recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran and the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. FIFA president Gianni Infantino told US President Donald Trump that he was welcome to the World Cup.
“There is no situation for a corrupt government to go and play in a country that killed the leader of our country,” Duumali said in an interview.
The World Cup is scheduled to begin on June 11. Iran will play against New Zealand on June 15, Belgium on June 21 and Egypt on June 26.
