KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said the state mechanism should show promptness to take stern action against the perpetrators of heinous crimes against women.

Speaking at a program organized on the occasion of the 116th International Women’s Day here today, President Bhandari expressed concern that Nepali women are still deprived of their basic human rights to live safely and dignifiedly.

Referring to the increasing incidents of domestic violence, acid attack, sexual abuse, rape and murder, the former President said such inhuman acts have tarnished the entire society. He stressed the need to end the situation where criminals get immunity or escape by using legal loopholes. She said that the role of civil society and women rights organizations is important to draw the attention of the state and provide justice to the victims.

“The state needs to show promptness to take legal action against those involved in heinous crimes like rape and murder,” he said. For this, it is imperative that civil society and women’s organizations continue to raise their voices.

Therefore, I believe that today we should take inspiration from the courage and dedication of the senior women involved in underground politics and inspire the new generation to move forward on the path of justice, equality and freedom. I hope that the incomparable contributions made by such brave and courageous women like you for the advancement and progressive transformation of the Nepali society through underground politics will inspire the new generation to continue to be active in the cause of justice and equality. ’

Remembering the fighters who fought for women’s rights in the past, she said that the new generation should be constantly vigilant in favour of justice, equality and freedom. Stating that building a prosperous society was impossible without the guarantee of women’s safety, she drew the attention of the stakeholders to make the justice system speedy, quick and victim-friendly.
