Kathmandu. KATHMANDU — Former Prime Minister and senior leader Jhalanath Khanal has called on the patriotic, democratic and progressive forces to emerge victorious in the upcoming elections to strengthen the democratic republic. In a message on the occasion of the Democracy Day, he said the upcoming elections should be properly utilized to prevent the country from heading towards further crisis.
Describing the election as both an opportunity as well as a challenge, he said voters should take a decision keeping in mind the long-term future of the country. Commenting that the so-called ‘new’ forces did not have a clear policy, programme or concrete commitment during the elections, Khanal said that there was no alternative to the political parties that have been involved in politics for a long time to move ahead with new resolutions by correcting the shortcomings of the past.
Recalling the historic day of the victory of democracy against the autocratic Rana oligarchy on 7 Falgun 2007, the Prime Minister has extended best wishes to all Nepalis living in and outside the country for their happiness, peace, prosperity and progress. He also paid tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the movement for the attainment of democracy.
Despite the achievements made as democratic revolution, Constituent Assembly, new constitution and periodic election, he said the country was not moving towards the expected prosperity even as it is nearly two decades after the establishment of democratic republic. Pointing out the need of land reforms, modernization of agriculture, national industrialization and drastic changes in education and health sectors, he called for moving ahead with a clear policy, strong commitment and people-oriented programme.
