Kathmandu. Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Thapa has stressed the need to safeguard Nepal’s democracy from populism.
Speaking at an interaction program organized by the Intellectual Professionals Campaign on Wednesday, he said that even a mature democracy has become a victim of populism and the time has come to save Nepal from becoming a victim of populism.
If populism comes with an authority through periodic elections, can we bear its burden? He said that this question has arisen and it should be answered.
“Even a fully mature democracy has become a victim of populism. It’s like a wave. Can we save Nepal’s democracy from the onslaught of populism? Our democracy is not very mature. Our economy has its own challenges. In a place where a democracy has matured institutions, populism comes and falls in 5-6 months. Can we bear the burden if populism comes with an authority through periodic elections when institutions are not strong? We have to find the answer to the question before us. ’
He also said that the political parties have hijacked the right of alliance politics to make elections.
He said, “The space of democracy has been hijacked. The political parties had hijacked the right to choose from the politics of the coalition that seemed to be normal. The Congress has tried to clean up the garbage in 165 constituencies to ensure that the Congress candidate contests in 165 constituencies. ’
