Kathmandu. The Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) is observing the 31st People’s War Day by organizing various programmes in Rukum (East) today.
CPN Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has reached Rukum (East) to observe the day jointly with the families of martyrs, disappeared and injured, disabled and locals.
The people’s war launched by the then CPN (Maoist) on February 14, 2052 BS lasted for ten years. This is the first time that leader Prachanda is celebrating the People’s War Day in Rukum (East). Rukum (East) is one of the youngest districts formed after the establishment of federalism. Prachanda is the candidate for the House of Representatives from Rukum (East) with the objective of initiating socialist revolution from the base area of the people’s war led by him.
Likewise, NCP coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ is scheduled to honour the families of martyrs at a programme to be organised at Khabang Bagar of Bhume rural municipality-2 today. There are 252 martyrs in Rukum (East).
The then CPN (Maoist) had launched the People’s War on Falgun 1, 1995 with the objective of ending the monarchy and establishing a new democratic system. The Maoists had started the insurgency by attacking Aathbiskot police post in Rukum, Holri police post in Rolpa, Sindhuligadhi police post in Sindhuli and Agriculture Development Bank in Chyangli of Gorkha.
The Maoists had made Rukum (East), Rukum (West and East) and Rolpa districts as their base areas to advance the People’s War.
On May 9, 1993, a policeman was killed in an ambush attack by the Maoists at Cherabang of Upper Sera. The Maoists had captured the three-knot three rifles for the first time in Nepal during an ambush attack in Cubang on January 16, 1998.
On September 19, 2056 BS, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Thule Rai and other security personnel were taken under control after attacking the police stationed at Mahat. Rai was one of the top police officers who were taken under the control of the Maoists during the people’s war. The Maoists had exchanged Rai with their top leader Dev Gurung.
In Chaitra 2057 BS, the Rukumkot police station was attacked and completely captured. A total of 40 people, including 32 police personnel and eight raiders, were killed in the attack.
In January 2061, a politburo meeting of the CPN (Maoist Centre) held at Lawbang of Rukum had expelled Dr Baburam Bhattarai from the party. The central committee meeting of the then CPN (Maoist) held at Chunbang of Rukum in 2062 BS had decided to move towards peaceful political journey by endorsing the political line of democratic republic.
The seven political parties had reached a 12-point agreement in course of implementing the decision of the Chunbang meeting. According to the agreement, the synergy of people’s war and people’s movement ended the monarchy and established republic, federalism, secularism and proportional representation system along with social justice.
Before marking the People’s War Day today, coordinator Prachanda said that the guerrillas had taken Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Thule Rai under control. He is scheduled to visit Labang village where the decision to take action against Baburam Bhattarai has been decided. He will meet voters in these villages while Prachanda is also scheduled to visit Chunbang today.
