Kathmandu. World Radio Day is celebrated on February 13 every year. This day is celebrated every year to recognize the contribution made by radio as an effective medium of information, education and entertainment.

In 2011, UNESCO declared February 13 as World Radio Day. Radio personalities, media organizations and listeners from all over the world organize special programs, interactions and awareness-raising activities on this day.

The radio was invented in 1894 by Italian scientist Guglielmo Marconi. The technology that could transmit sound through wireless means revolutionized the field of communication. Over time, radio has expanded from shortwave, medium wave to FM and digital technology.

In Nepal too, radio has its own historical importance. After the establishment of Radio Nepal, radio has been developed as a powerful medium of information dissemination throughout the country. Radio has been playing an effective role during political changes, people’s movements and disasters.

Especially, During the 2015 earthquake, rescue and relief operations were facilitated by the exchange of information throughout the country through radio when other media were affected.

Despite the rapid development of technology and the expansion of social media and digital platforms, radio is still established as a reliable, accessible and effective medium of communication.
