Since the main occupation of these two wards is sheep and goat rearing, the local shepherds are worried about the rapid spread of the disease.TAG_OPEN_p_8 According to Ratnalal Devkota, vice-president of Nepal Farmers’ Federation Karnali Province, there are around 1,500-2,000 sheep and goats in the area.
The infected animal has symptoms of pus buildup in the lungs, water bubbles all over the body, swelling of the hair, stool smell, thinness, coughing and vomiting.TAG_OPEN_p_7 According to the shepherds, 200 out of 80 sheep of Ratan Malla have died, 9 out of 60 goats of Punna Malla, 9 out of 45 goats of Naule Nepali, 20 out of 150 goats of Kaichandra Devkota, 10 out of 45 goats of Pradip Pyakurel, 6 out of 50 goats of Parakelal Jaisi and 7 out of 40 goats of Kabe Jaisi have died.
Local farmers have been working day and night to earn their livelihood through sheep and goat rearing, but they have to face huge losses. Some shepherds have expressed dissatisfaction saying the rural municipality and the District Livestock Service Office did not inform them on time and did not provide medicines and assistance.
Locals have demanded the authorities concerned to immediately mobilize a technical team including veterinary doctors to identify, control the disease and provide relief to the affected farmers.TAG_OPEN_p_5
