Kathmandu. The government has claimed that the rumors that the Prime Minister has asked for the resignation of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) are completely misleading and baseless.

Responding to journalists’ queries at a press conference organized to unveil Cabinet decisions on Tuesday, Minister for Education and Government of Nepal Sasmit Pokharel said that rumors are being spread outside regarding internal information leakage within Nepal Police.

Spokesperson Pokharel clarified that the police had only conducted a general investigation and inquiries through its own internal mechanism regarding the leakage of internal and sensitive information within the police organization. “It is not a matter of whether the Prime Minister has asked for the resignation of the IGP or is going to take action,” he said, adding that it is just a simple internal inquiry by the police to find out from where the information was leak

ed.

“Neither the government nor the Prime Minister has issued any directive to arrest any journalists,” Pokharel said.

Instead, he said that the Prime Minister has instructed the police to release anyone immediately even if they have been detained during the interrogation of information leak. He said that it was only the interrogation of the police rather than any kind of detention, and if they were in custody, they should be released immediately.

He reiterated that the government was fully committed to the rights guaranteed by the Constitution of Nepal to the media.
