Kathmandu. The process of implementing the necessary navigation system has been initiated to reduce flight disruption due to adverse weather and low visibility at Pokhara International Airport.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has started a technical study to implement the necessary navigation performance and pre-approval landing process at Pokhara Airport.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Khadak Raj Poudel said the event is expected to reduce flight disruption due to adverse weather, diversion to other airports and cancellations.

“The process of implementing the RNP-AR landing process at Pokhara International Airport has started. This is expected to help reduce flight disruptions, diversions and cancellations due to adverse weather and low visibility,” he wrote on social media.

According to him, this is an important step towards making Pokhara’s air service more safe, regular and reliable.

According to the authority, the flight landing process based on the VOR-DME and ILS systems is currently operational at Pokhara Airport. Due to the geographical location of the airport, the surrounding hilly terrain, and technical and operational limitations, it is challenging to operate flights in adverse weather and low visibility.

To address this problem, the authority has given priority to the implementation of satellite-based navigation system. The preliminary study on the RNP-AR process at Pokhara Airport has been completed.

However, in order to implement the process, a detailed process will have to be designed, certified, safety evaluated, and necessary approvals will be obtained as per the prevailing regulatory standards. After the completion of these procedures, the minimum visibility limit required to operate flights at low visibility can be reduced, the authority said.

It is expected that this will reduce the need to divert flights due to adverse weather, landing attempts will not be successful and flights will have to be canceled. The authority believes that it will also help in providing more reliable air service to the passengers.

CAAN aims to make Pokhara Airport’s flight services safe, regular and effective through the development and implementation of air navigation system based on modern technology.
