Kathmandu. Bada Dashain, the great festival of Nepalis, which formally begins every year from Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, has started from today.
This festival is celebrated with great pomp for 15 days till Ashwin Shukla Purnima. Today, after finishing the daily rituals early in the morning, sand or soil is brought from the nearest river or a clean place and placed in a puja room or Dashain house smeared with cow dung and planted on it. This ritual is also called keeping the jamara. Since barley sprouts are a favorite thing of Goddess Durga, today barley is planted and offered to Durga and on the day of Vijayadashami, along with Tika Prasad, the yellow jamara symbolizing prosperity is also accepted.
There is no classical method of planting grains other than barley in Jamara, said theologian and former chairman of the Nepal Calendar Determination Development Committee, Prof. Dr. Ramchandra Gautam said. According to the family tradition, some other grains are also planted with barley. Jamara is also used in Ayurvedic medicine.
