Kathmandu. The Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi floods have caused damage and economic loss worth Rs 408 billion, according to government estimates.
According to the Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA) report after the floods, out of the total impact of the disaster, Rs. 274.48 billion was the direct physical damage and Rs. 133.81 billion was the economic loss.
For the reconstruction, rehabilitation and economic recovery of the damage caused by the floods, Rs. 723.32 billion is estimated to be required. This is almost two times more than the total loss and loss.
According to the RDNA report, 15 local levels in five districts have been affected by the floods. The disaster has damaged 7,570 buildings and 32,963 people of 8,317 households have been directly affected.
The share of the infrastructure sector in the total disaster affected by floods is 46.55 percent. However, the share of the infrastructure sector in the total amount required for recovery and reconstruction has reached 65.47 percent.
The required share of infrastructure sector is more as it requires huge investment in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructures like roads, bridges, drinking water, energy, housing and other infrastructures.
In addition, the report states that the recovery cost has significantly increased compared to the damage as the structures have to be rebuilt in a way that is stronger and risk-resistant than before.
The productive sector, on the other hand, has borne 36.83 per cent of the total disaster impact. However, its share in the recovery requirement is only 7.02 per cent. This gap is due to the fact that a large part of the productive sector is an economic loss due to loss of income and production, which has to be addressed through economic recovery rather than physical reconstruction.
Among the affected local levels, Bidur Municipality of Nuwakot has been the most affected. A total of 3,431 buildings have been affected in Bidur, which is about 41 percent of the total affected buildings.
Similarly, 1,156 buildings in Gosainkunda Rural Municipality of Rasuwa, 1,146 buildings in Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality of Dhading and 721 buildings in Kispang Rural Municipality of Nuwakot have been affected.
The report has shown that along with the recovery of damage and damage caused by floods, priority should be given to reducing the risk of such disasters in the future. In particular, it has been estimated that a large investment will be required to make infrastructure reconstruction risk-resistant and sustainable.
According to the RDNA report, the total disaster impact from the Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi floods is Rs. 408.29 billion and the total recovery requirement is Rs. 723.32 billion.
