Kathmandu. The followers of the Vedic Sanatan Dharma are celebrating Kushe Aunsi and the new moon of the father’s face by bringing holy Kush to their homes today. In this festival celebrated on the day of Bhadra Krishna Aunsi, there is a tradition of keeping Kush used in the work of gods and ancestors at home throughout the year.
According to the scriptural rituals, there is a religious belief that keeping Kush worshiped by a Brahmin and taken to the house of the patron will bring welfare to the family. Sanatan Dharma devotees consider Kush, Tulsi, Peepal and Shaligram as symbols of Lord Vishnu. According to religious beliefs, Brahmaji also created the holy Kush along with the rational being.
There is a tradition of using Kush as a sacred plant in Sanatan Sanskar. Kush is used in religious rituals, Shraddha, Tarpan and other rituals. There is also a tradition of wearing a ring made of Kush i.e. Pavitri.
Kushe Aunsi is also celebrated as the day of seeing the father’s face. On this day, children honor their father by gifting sweets, fruits, food and clothes. Children who are far away or abroad pay their respects by talking to their father over the phone and other means.
There is a tradition of Shraddha, Tarpan, Pind Daan and Sidadan in the name of the deceased father by visiting various religious and holy pilgrimage places. Religious rituals are performed in the memory of ancestors at pilgrimage sites including Gokarneshwor Mahadev Temple in Kathmandu, Betrawati of Rasuwa, Devghat of Tanahun, Bishnupaduka and Barahachhetra of Sunsari.
A special fair is held on the premises of the Gokarneshwor Mahadev Temple in the northeast part of Kathmandu today. Devotees throng here to perform tarpan, pind daan and sidadaan in the name of the deceased father. Since Gokarneshwar is also known as Uttargaya, today’s new moon is also called Gokarna Aunsi.
