Kathmandu. About 170,000 passengers have been affected at eight airports after a volcanic eruption in Indonesia.
Flights from these airports have been temporarily suspended.
Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was the first to be closed on Sunday morning. The decision to suspend flights was made after ash from the Anak Krakatoa volcano was found in the sky near the airport.
According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Transport, 1,558 flights have been delayed. The airports will remain closed until 9 a.m. local time on Monday.
According to officials, the volcanic eruption started on Friday night. After that, there was continuous earthquake-like activity in the surrounding areas.
Lava fountains and powerful explosions were also heard. Two more explosions occurred on Sunday morning.
According to the Ministry of Transport, flights to and from Singapore have been mainly affected due to the suspension of flight operations. Apart from this, flights to other international destinations, including Doha, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur, have also been affected.
