Kathmandu. Royalist activist and medical practitioner Durga Prasai was taken into custody from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on Sunday while returning to Kathmandu from Jhapa. <\/p>\n
Immediately after his arrival in Kathmandu from Jhapa, Prasain said that he would address the problems of landless squatters, incidents of self-immolation, the situation of the poor and the victims, among other contemporary national issues. A team led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Bhattarai took him under control soon after he landed at the airport. After that, the police took him to his residence in Bhaktapur in his own vehicle. <\/p>\n
Speaking at a press conference organized after returning home, Prasain criticized the government over the present social and economic situation of the country and accused the government of not being serious about the proletariat, homeless citizens and incidents of self-immolation. <\/p>\n
“The proletariat, the homeless, who have taken to the streets,” he said. Not only this, he started self-immolation by pouring petrol on his body. When the house is ruined, that situation comes. This is the state of the country. A country is made up of every family. Today, that family is not in anyone’s house. This is just the beginning. \u2019<\/p>\n
Prasain also accused the political parties of indulging in corruption, exploitation and various financial irregularities in the last 35 years. “For 35 years, the political parties ruled unilaterally, indulged in corruption and exploitation. They also ran microfinance, they ran cooperatives, they also partnered with smugglers. That is why the people have brought this new government with their support,” he said. <\/p>\n
Claiming that the incumbent government failed to live up to the people’s expectation, he expressed dissatisfaction over the removal of squatters’ settlements. “What this new government has done is demolished the houses of those who have votes. Those who voted for them demolished their houses and took them away thinking they would be submerged in water, and then finally drowned the landless squatters,” he said. <\/p>\n
Raising the issue of fine on vehicles, Prasain said that Nepal has more punitive system than infrastructure development. “In many countries of the world, roads are built first and infrastructure is prepared. After that, we have given a good road, now we will be fined that we cannot violate the rules. But Nepal has neither the infrastructure nor the roads are good. Now there are excessive fines that no one can afford,” he said. <\/p>\n
Referring to the government’s announcement of providing relief and assistance to the family of Ganesh Nepali who committed self-immolation, Prasain questioned the government’s decision to provide relief and assistance. “The government now says that it will provide jobs to Ganesh Nepali’s family, compensate them and educate their children. But should everyone be Ganesh Nepali to teach their children? Should Nepalis self-immolate? Is that what the homeless should do now? ” he asked. <\/p>\n
He claimed that 22 to 25 people were losing their lives by hanging every day in the country and the government did not pay attention to it. “Why is the government not paying attention to this? This government is not our government, it is not the government of Nepalis. Today, Nepalis have not been able to find shelter even in the river. An empty stomach, soaked in water. What will be the condition of the child in the winter? What a heart-wrenching story.
