Although bird flu has come under control in most of the districts of the country, the risk of bird flu is still in the Kathmandu Valley, Bhaktapur and Kavrepalanchowk. According to the Department of Livestock Services, the infection has been completely controlled in eight of the 11 districts so far while surveillance and management is underway in three districts.

The alert has been stepped up after the infection started appearing in the areas where the population density is high and the poultry business is expanded. According to experts, the number of poultry farms in the vicinity of the Kathmandu Valley and high pressure in the market have added to the challenges in controlling the infection.

Bird flu is an infectious disease that affects chickens and other birds. Since infected birds can easily spread to other birds, timely identification, management of infected birds and biosecurity measures are considered to be the main basis of control.

According to the Department of Livestock Services, the infection which was seen in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Mahottari, Bara, Chitwan, among other districts has now come under control. However, the infection situation in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Kavrepalanchowk is still under surveillance, according to the Department.

Necessary control measures have been carried out in coordination with the federal and local governments after carrying out on-site monitoring of the infected areas. According to the department, 754,500 birds, 1 million 91 thousand 303 eggs and 243,635 kilos of feed have been destroyed so far in course of controlling the spread of coronavirus.

The government has intensified surveillance on the transportation of chickens and eggs by identifying the infected areas. Likewise, poultry entrepreneurs have been urged to adopt biosecurity at the farms, control the outcoming of outsiders, carry out regular cleaning and inform the bodies concerned if any unhealthy birds are spotted.

According to experts, awareness is more important than fear to control bird flu. According to them, the risk of infection can be reduced through scientific management of infected birds, use of safe products and consumer caution.

Health experts have said that the risk of infection from properly cooked chicken and eggs is very low under normal circumstances. They have urged the citizens not to panic unnecessarily and take precautions.

Kathmandu.
