Asar 15 i.e. the day to eat curd and beaten rice is a special occasion associated with both Nepali culture and health. It has been customary to eat curd and beaten rice since the tradition to maintain the necessary energy, nutrition and digestive health of the body during the busy season of paddy planting.

Curd and flattened rice are not only a cultural tradition but also scientifically beneficial food for health, said public health expert Dr. Giriraj Singh. Dr. Aruna Upreti explains.

In a conversation with Nepal News Bank, she said that curd helps to strengthen the stomach and digestive system and the beaten rice provides enough energy, so this dish is a healthy Nepali dish that can be eaten regularly not only on Asar 15 but throughout the year.

Although curd and flattened rice are nutritious and balanced food for the body, it should not be taken as medicine for all diseases or miraculous food, she said.

According to him, yogurt helps to improve gut health, balance the digestive system and provide the necessary beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in the body. This is the reason why curd and mohi have had a special place in Nepali food culture since time immemorial.

She said, “Yogurt is a good food that improves the health of the body. It improves the health of the stomach. That is why yogurt and mustard have always been an integral part of our diet. ’

According to Dr Upreti, curd and beaten rice were the best food to provide energy for the farmers who were working hard for paddy sowing in the month of June. In the past, it was easy to transport beaten rice and curd to the fields as food was not easily available in the market as it is now.

“The beaten rice doesn’t spoil for long,” she said. It contains enough carbohydrates, energy, some protein and other nutrients. Eating yogurt gives the body the necessary energy and also improves the digestive system. ’

According to him, the practice of eating curd, mustard and flattened rice has developed to prevent dehydration in summer. According to him, this tradition still has a scientific basis.

It’s also good to eat fruits with a mix of fruits

Nowadays, the trend of eating various fruits mixed with curd and flattened rice is increasing. In this regard, Dr. Upreti said that mixing fruits with healthy food is even more beneficial.

“Earlier, it was not customary to eat fruits mixed with fruits. It’s a good idea to mix fruits and other foods with healthy foods,” she said.

It helps you lose weight, but…

According to him, the notion that curd and beaten rice reduce weight is partially true.

She clarified, “Even if you eat a little curd and beaten rice, you feel full and you do not feel hungry for a long time.” Therefore, the habit of eating more is less. This can help in weight control. But if you eat curd and flattened rice, then you will not lose weight. ’

Not a stress reliever

She said that the claim that curd and beaten rice relieves stress and anxiety is not scientifically substantiated.

“Any healthy diet has a positive impact on physical and mental health. But eating curd and beaten rice does not mean that stress or anxiety goes away. Lifestyle, regular diet, adequate sleep and other habits are equally important for good mental health,” she said.

Advice to eat throughout the year

Dr. Upreti advised to eat curd and flattened rice not only on June 15 but regularly throughout the year.

Stressing on the need of feeding traditional Nepali nutritious food instead of junk food, she said, “Dahi and beaten rice should not be eaten only on June 15.” You can eat it once or twice a week. Children should be given such traditional healthy foods rather than noodles, biscuits or junk food. It teaches them good food culture and healthy lifestyle from an early age. ’

She also extended best wishes to all Nepalis on the occasion of National Paddy Day and the Dahi-Beaten rice Festival and urged all to adopt healthy traditional food in daily life as well.

Curd and beaten rice are beneficial for health: Public Health Expert Dr. Upreti }TAG_OPEN_strong_44 Kathmandu.
