Kathmandu. Nepali Congress lawmaker Nishkal Rai accused the government of negligent attention to the problems faced by the tea industry and farmers. <\/p>\n
Speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Minister Pokharel said that the export of Nepali tea has been affected due to the new quality standard imposed by the neighbouring country India, which has directly affected the industries and farmers. <\/p>\n
Hurdles have surfaced in Nepali tea export after the Tea Board of India implemented a new standard called ‘Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)’, he said. <\/p>\n
“It has been around three days since the tea industry and farmers padlocked the tea factory citing problems in the export of tea from neighbouring countries, citing quality test,” he said. <\/p>\n
According to Rai, it takes more than two weeks to get the test report of the tea as per the new provision, the tea cannot be sold until the report is submitted. <\/p>\n
“The Tea Board of India has come up with a new standard operating standard (SOP). “It takes more than two weeks to get the test report, we cannot sell the tea until the report is received and if there are few problems in the report, we have to destroy the produced tea,” he said. <\/p>\n
Lawmaker Rai expressed dissatisfaction saying that the government has not paid attention to sensitive issues. He also accused the government of not paying any attention to address the problems of tea industry and farmers as more than three crore kilograms of tea is exported annually and contributes significantly to country’s economy. <\/p>\n
“The government has not paid any attention to such a sensitive issue. This is the seventh time this has happened,” he said, adding, “The honorable prime minister is building the country with the other two honorable ministers.” He also goes to the tea shop he knows by looking at social media and drinks tea, but he does not seem to have time to solve the problems of the tea industrialists and farmers who are the backbone of the economy and more than three crore readymade tea is exported annually. \u2019<\/p>\n
Drawing the attention of the government towards addressing the problems of the tea sector at the earliest, he demanded necessary diplomatic and policy initiatives for protecting the interests of the farmers and industrialists. <\/p>\n
