Although the upgradation and blacktopping of the Dhulikhel-Khawa road section along the Araniko Highway has reached the final stage, the construction works have been affected in recent period due to lack of construction materials. Locals and commuters who have been facing problems of dust, mud and traffic jam for a long time have been waiting for the completion of the road, but the pace of the construction has slowed for the past few weeks.

According to the Road Division Office, Bhaktapur, the blacktopping has begun from Dhulikhel Chowk. Out of the total length of the road, 2.5 km has been blacktopped in the first phase and the remaining 1.5 km will be blacktopped in the second phase.

Earlier, a contractor was awarded the contract to complete the project within 22 months on June 3, 2022. However, the Road Division Office, Bhaktapur had terminated the contract on March 9, 2081 after the project could not be completed even after 11 months of the deadline.

After this, a new contract was called in August last year with the aim of completing the project within 14 months by securing Rs 420 million from the government. The newly contracted contractor had set a target to complete the road blacktopping before the onset of monsoon.

According to the construction company, a 20 cm thick cement base has been placed on gravel and then blacktopped in two layers of DBM and asphalt. Base, sub-base and first layer blacktopping of most sections of the road has been completed so far.

The main section from Dhulikhel bazaar area to Khawa has been blacktopped while the works of blacktopping, roadside management, drainage construction and lane marking are yet to be carried out in some places. However, the final phase of work has been affected due to problems in the supply of necessary construction materials including bitumen and crushing materials. No significant activity has been seen at the construction site for the past few days due to the lack of timely supply of construction materials.

According to the locals, the blacktopping and graveling of heavy equipment was being carried out on a daily basis until some months ago. However, the presence of equipment and workers at the construction site has also decreased in recent years. This has disappointed the locals who were expecting that the road would be completed soon.

The Dhulikhel-Khawa road section is an important part of the Suryabinayak-Dhulikhel Road Expansion Project. The construction of the road, which is the main gateway to eastern Nepal from the Kathmandu Valley, has been inconvenienced to the passengers, entrepreneurs and locals for years.

The construction side has said that the remaining work will be expedited once the problem of material supply is resolved. Although the target was to complete the blacktopping and other structural works as far as possible before the onset of monsoon, the shortage of materials could affect the target.

However, the condition of the road has improved significantly compared to the past as the blacktopping has been completed in most parts. Although the problem of dust and mud has eased to some extent, the passengers are still having to travel in some places as the remaining works are yet to be completed. Locals have demanded the authorities concerned to ensure regular supply of construction materials and complete remaining works of the road at the earliest.

Kathmandu.
