Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has slapped a three-year jail term and a fine of up to Rs 3,000 on anyone found using the title of doctor illegally. The government has decided to take action against those who write ‘doctor’ or ‘doctor’ in front of their name without being legally registered with the Medical Council and the concerned council. <\/p>\n
Issuing an urgent notice on Thursday, the Council said that legal process will be initiated against those who use the title ‘Dr’ illegally by adopting the ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy. <\/p>\n
According to the council, the public health has been adversely affected by the unauthorized use of the title of doctor in various hospitals, private clinics, counseling centers and social networks. <\/p>\n
As per the Nepal Medical Council Act, 2020, only the doctors registered with the NMC have the authority to examine, counsel and recommend allopathic medicines under the modern medical system. <\/p>\n
The title ‘Doctor’ should be removed within 15 days if any other health worker or person other than a doctor registered with the Council or other person has been given the title ‘Doctor’ in front of their name. <\/p>\n
The council has also directed the government to remove the signboards, prescription pads, visiting cards and all social networking sites including Facebook, TikTok and Instagram. <\/p>\n
“The Council will not be allowed to practice medicine independently in Nepal just because the certificate of a foreign or domestic university mentions ‘Doctor’,” reads the notice. \u2019<\/p>\n
After the expiry of the 15-day deadline, a special monitoring team of the Council will conduct monitoring through on-site and digital means. Dipendra Pandey explains. <\/p>\n
Pandey said that cases will be filed as per Sections 26 and 27 of the Nepal Medical Council Act, 2020 if anyone is found using the title ‘Dr’ illegally or examining patients and recommending medicines under the pretext of that title. <\/p>\n
According to the Council, if found guilty, the council will face up to three years of imprisonment, a fine of up to three thousand rupees or both. <\/p>\n
