Kathmandu. The number of patients visiting the government hospitals for OPD has increased on Monday following the government’s decision to declare a holiday on Sunday. The government had decided to give a public holiday on Saturday and Sunday to address the global shortage of fuel. Doctors say that health services have to be affected due to the limited manpower and infrastructure of various government hospitals in the capital. <\/p>\n

Long queues at big government hospitals including Teaching Hospital, Bir Hospital, National Trauma Center have become common since early morning. The number of people coming to seek services is increasing due to the compulsion to depend on a single hospital for basic check-ups and treatment of complex diseases. <\/p>\n

According to health workers, a doctor has to examine 100 to 150 patients daily, which is much higher than the international standard. Generally, a doctor should examine 30-40 patients daily to provide quality service. But in Kathmandu’s government hospitals, this proportion is three to four times higher. <\/p>\n

Along with the pressure of patients, the problem of doctors not being able to give enough time to each patient has also increased due to lack of time. Health experts say that there is a risk of affecting the quality of treatment. On the other hand, the high cost of private hospital services has left the poor and low-income citizens out of reach. Many private hospitals in the capital are compelled to visit government hospitals as thousands of rupees are spent on basic check-ups. <\/p>\n

According to an official of the Department of Health Services, the problem will not be resolved until the necessary manpower, equipment and infrastructure are expanded in the government hospitals. “Primary health centres and state-level hospitals should be made effective to reduce the flow of patients,” he said. According to experts, effective implementation of the health insurance program, expansion of health services in the rural areas and increase the number of doctors can help manage the overcrowding in Kathmandu’s government hospitals. <\/p>\n
