KATHMANDU: Bangladesh’s former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has reiterated her insistence that she will return home in December despite being sentenced to death.

Hasina, who has been in exile in India since being ousted from power in the 2024 student protests, said the decision would not change despite the possibility of arrest, imprisonment and torture.

Hasina was sentenced to death by a special tribunal for crimes against humanity in 2025 for deadly repression of protesters.

According to a UN report, nearly 1,400 people were killed in the incident. Hasina, however, denied the allegations and questioned the legitimacy of the verdict.

India has not yet handed him over despite repeated requests from Bangladesh for his extradition.

In an emailed reply to The Associated Press, he said he wanted to die on the soil of his own country and among his citizens.

After Hasina’s ouster, the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus ruled for 18 months. Khaleda Zia’s son, Tariq Rehman, came to power in the elections held in February.

Since August 2024, at least 20,000 of her party members have been killed and thousands have been arrested, tortured and displaced, she said.
