Kathmandu. Finance Minister and Governor of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Dr. Swarnim Wagle has urged AIIB President Zhou Jiayi to expand investment in Nepal’s infrastructure sector along with the post-flood reconstruction. <\/p>\n
During the meeting between Finance Minister Wagle and Chair Zhou who arrived in Doha to attend the 11th annual meeting of the AIIB Governor’s Council, matters related to expansion of bank investment in Nepal, reconstruction after natural disaster and expansion of concessional financial access were discussed. <\/p>\n
During the meeting, President Zhou expressed her condolences for the loss of life and material in Nepal due to the recent floods in the Bhotekoshi River and pledged to support the bank in the resilient reconstruction after the disaster. She said that the AIIB will provide grant assistance for project preparation through the Project Preparation Specialized Fund. <\/p>\n
She also expressed the view that the loans provided to Nepal can be maintained at more concessional interest rates by using the grant under the Specialized Fund Window. As a founding member of the AIIB, President Zhou also expressed her commitment to further strengthen cooperation with Nepal. <\/p>\n
During the meeting, Finance Minister Wagle urged the government to complete the study of the Electricity Distribution System Improvement and Expansion Project and the Express Road at the earliest. He also expressed sorrow over the damage caused by floods at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project, which is invested by AIIB. <\/p>\n
Minister Wagle urged the AIIB to mobilize its resources in green energy, cross-border power transmission lines, roads and digital infrastructure development as part of medium-term and long-term cooperation. He urged the bank to increase investment in Nepal’s infrastructure projects by mobilizing its own resources as well as those of other donor agencies.
