Kathmandu. The Indian Embassy in Nepal has made public the process to be followed for the identification of the bodies of Indian nationals who died in the floods on August 26. <\/p>\n
The embassy has urged the relatives of the deceased to help identify the dead bodies by providing photos or DNA profiles. <\/p>\n
According to the Indian Embassy, the relatives of the deceased can identify the dead bodies on the basis of photos and details posted on the Nepal Police website. <\/p>\n
After identifying the dead body, the embassy would coordinate with the local authorities to facilitate the process of taking the dead body to India. <\/p>\n
According to a press release issued by the Nepali Embassy, the following procedures for the repatriation of a dead body of a foreign national will be completed: preparation of dead body documents, recording photos and details of the dead body, post-mortem examination, proving the cause of death, establishing formal identity, collection of fingerprints, DNA, forensic samples, attestation of the passport or identity card of the deceased, completion of embassy consular coordination and preparation of release memo and receipt for the transfer of the dead body. \u2019<\/p>\n
The Embassy of India in Kathmandu has said that if the family members are able to identify the dead body on the basis of the photos and details posted on the website of Nepal Police, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu will cooperate with the local authorities in the process of handing over the body and sending it to India. <\/p>\n
The Embassy said that the Government of Nepal has temporarily buried a large number of bodies to prevent health risks. To identify such bodies, DNA matches have to be done with the first level relatives of the deceased. <\/p>\n
In case the body is temporarily buried, the family members can send a DNA profile or blood sample for DNA matching. <\/p>\n
According to the embassy, the government of Nepal will arrange for DNA matching in case the body is not identified or the body is buried temporarily. The authorities in Nepal are collecting DNA samples from the bodies and preparing their DNA profiles. <\/p>\n
For DNA matching, first-level relatives of the deceased can send their DNA profile via email or provide blood sample with preliminary details as requested by the Nepali authorities. <\/p>\n
If facilitation is required through the Indian Embassy, a copy of the DNA profile of the first level of the relatives can also be sent. <\/p>\n

So far, 939 people have died in the devastating floods in Rasuwa on August 26. So far, 279 dead bodies have been recovered from Chitwan, 216 from Nawalparasi East, 168 from Nawalparasi West, 65 from Gorkha, 55 from Dhading, 38 from Tanahun and 23 from Rasuwa. <\/p>\n
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 3,925 people are still missing. Of the missing, 592 are foreign nationals. <\/p>\n
